Maternidad y paternidad en los imaginarios sociales de mujeres y varones. Maternity and Paternity in the Social Imaginaries of Women and Men

Resumen

Los bajos niveles de fecundidad en Cuba, dada su repercusión en el envejecimiento
poblacional, son objeto de interés para los círculos académicos y políticos, los cuales consideran la necesidad del análisis de sus múltiples condicionantes y reconocen la utilidad de la comprensión de diversos aspectos subjetivos asociados a estos hechos. El estudio del imaginario social acerca de la maternidad y la paternidad, desde la teoría de las representaciones sociales (RS), es la ruta seguida en investigaciones empíricas con enfoque cualitativo, realizadas a partir de 2001 en diferentes grupos en La Habana, con el fin de establecer la relación existente entre las RS de la maternidad y la paternidad, y la decisión de asumir estos procesos. Los resultados han permitido reflexionar acerca de las determinantes de género, socioeconómicas y culturales, incidentes en las configuraciones subjetivas reguladoras del comportamiento humano que serán presentadas en este
trabajo.

Low levels of fertility in Cuba, given its impact on population´s aging, are subjects of interest for academic and political circles, who consider the need to analyze their multiple contributing factors and acknowledge the benefit of understanding different subjective aspects associated to these facts. Maternity and paternity social imaginaries studies, in terms of the theory of social representations (SR), constitute the path followed along the empirical research with a qualitative approach, performed since 2001 by different groups in Havana, and directed towards establishing a relationship between maternity and paternity SR, and the decision of assuming such processes. The results
have made possible the insights on gender, socio-economic and cultural determinants,
influencing the subjective regulations of human behavior that will be submitted in the present paper.
